US Renewables Generate More Than Gas - Good Climate News
The United States generated more electricity from renewables in March than from fossil gas, heralds Canary Media. The record is partly due to seasonal factors, such as historically high hydro and wind generation. But it nevertheless represents the first time renewables have outpaced gas on a monthly basis and is a harbinger of larger milestones to come.
“…solar, batteries, and wind together will once again make up the overwhelming majority of new energy capacity added to the grid this year. The same was true last year. And the year before. And the year before that…”
2. EV Sales Soar 42% in Australia
Sales of fully battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Australia have soared 42% in a single month, reports ABC News. The jump from February to March is attributed to the War in Iran and its effect on gasoline prices.
“…petrol car sales are declining and are down more than 25 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to just four years ago.”
3. UK Approves Largest Solar Project
The United Kingdom has swatted aside NIMBY concerns and approved the largest solar project in the nation’s history, explains Electrek. The project – which opponents have likened to Chernobyl – will generate low-carbon, homegrown electricity.
“Once Springwell comes online in 2029, it’s expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 180,000 homes a year – roughly half the homes in Lincolnshire.”
4. New York Church Goes Geothermal
A New York City church has switched to geothermal for its heating needs, notes Inside Climate News. The installation at Christ Church Bronxville proves the low-carbon technology can be adopted even in the densest cities with crowded underground landscapes.
“…the installation drastically reduces the amount of greenhouse gases it releases. Buildings make up more than two-thirds of New York City’s emissions, and a significant amount of the state’s.”
