Solar Overtakes Coal in Texas | Good Climate News
Texas now generates more electricity from solar than it does from coal, heralds Canary Media. Texas has been building solar farms at a furious rate, and the clean, renewable technology represented 14% of its electricity in 2025, versus 13% for coal.
“Back in 2020, the Texas grid got just 2% of its electricity from solar power and 18% from coal…”
2. UK Holds Record 8.4 GW Wind Auction
The UK has held its most successful wind energy auction ever, reports Carbon Brief. Contracts have been awarded for an astounding 8.4 GW of new offshore wind generation, which will come online between 2028 and 2031.
“The capacity secured in the latest auction will generate around 37 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity each year, around 12% of the nation’s total demand.”
3. Cheap Chinese EVs Coming to Canada
Canada has signed a trade deal that will bring inexpensive Chinese EVs to the Canadian market, relays CBC News. The deal lowers tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles from 100% to 6%, potentially accelerating the electrification of Canada’s transport sector.
“There's demand for more affordable and climate-conscious EVs and, for an average customer, having Chinese EVs in the market means more choice and greater tech …”

4. MENA Installs 12.2 GW of Solar in 2025
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is getting serious about solar, explains PV Magazine. A record 12.2 GW of solar generation was added last year, and new, colossal megaprojects are in the pipeline.
“Saudi Arabia has become the country in the region with the largest operational solar capacity. The kingdom inaugurated several massive solar projects in 2025, taking combined capacity past 11 GW.”
5. Work Resumes on Largest US Wind Farm
Work has resumed on the United States’ largest wind farm following a court battle with the Trump administration, notes Inside Climate News. When the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project is complete, it will provide 2.6 GW of clean electrical generation capacity.
“Approved in 2022, construction of the CVOW’s 176 turbines was about 70 percent complete when the Trump administration issued the stop-work order. The utility had planned to start sending some of the electricity to customers early this year as construction is completed by the end of 2026.”
📈 Chart of the Week
Solar is dominating new electricity generation in the United States, meeting 61% of demand growth in 2025. According to energy think-tank Ember, solar generated 387 TWh of electricity in the US last year - 83 TWh more than in 2024. Solar now accounts for 8.5% of all US generation.
