Mexico Approves Massive Solar Projects | Good Climate News
Mexico has greenlit a series of huge solar projects totaling over 2 GW, heralds PV Magazine. Historically a laggard with regard to renewables, the country has made clean energy a priority under the presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum, a climate change scientist.
“The bidding process signalled the reactivation of the sector after a six-year period characterized by the paralysis of new projects…between 2018 and 2024.”
2. Solar Boom Brewing in Kansas
One of America’s sunniest states may finally be ready for solar energy, explains Canary Media. Wind energy has historically crowded out solar in Kansas, but this year the state opened its first true utility-scale solar farm.
“Several even larger projects are expected to come online over the next few years, including a sprawling 510 MW installation slated to go live next December.”
3. Wyoming Coal Production Hits Record Low
Coal production in Wyoming fell in 2025 to its second-lowest level since its peak in 2008, relays Wyoming Public Media. The statistics show that the Trump administration’s last-ditch effort to prop up the coal industry simply is not working.
“Really it just comes down to cost,” said Godby. “It's just more expensive to run a coal-fired power plant. The power plants in the country are fewer and fewer because they're all getting older.”
4. Texas Ready for Winter Thanks to Batteries
Texas’ electric grid will be more reliable this year thanks to batteries, notes Inside Climate News. Even accounting for cold-weather performance impairments, the massive amount of new battery capacity on the grid makes it more resilient to extreme weather events.
“Of the 1,999 new generation interconnection requests totaling 432 gigawatts, nearly 41 percent are from energy storage projects.”

5. Balcony Solar Rises in Germany
Small plug-and-play solar panels are taking off in Germany, reports DW News. Panels are typically hung off of balconies and plugged directly into the mains socket, delivering cheap do-it-yourself power to renters and homeowners.
“Interest is now spreading to other countries, including many in the EU, as well as Brazil, the United States and Japan.”
6. Bill McKibben on Solar Energy
Renewable energy is unstoppable, says Bill McKibben in an interview with The Guardian.
“Alternative energy is the commonsense, obvious, straightforward way to make power on this planet, which is why 95% of new generating capacity around planet Earth last year came from these clean sources…
“This is the Costco of energy, man – cheap, available in bulk, on the shelf, ready to go.”
McKibben is promoting his new book Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization.
📈 Chart of the Week
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption may be stalling in the United States, but the rest of the world is a very different story. According to a new analysis by energy think tank Ember, more than one-quarter of new cars sold globally in 2025 were electric. And some big countries like China are rapidly closing in on 100% EVs.
“Indonesia has reached 15% this year, surpassing the United States for the first time. Thailand has reached 20% and has sold more EVs in the first three quarters of 2025 than Denmark.”
