Japan Builds First Floating Wind Farm | Good Climate News
The first offshore floating wind farm in Japan has come online, heralds Power Magazine. Japan has massive offshore wind potential, but it remains largely undeveloped. The best resource lies beyond the continental shelf and therefore requires the use of newer, more expensive floating technology.
“Japanese officials last year reiterated the country’s goal of at least 10 GW of installed offshore wind generation capacity by 2030, and 45 GW by 2040.”
2. Efficiencies Could Halve Global Aviation Emissions
Aviation emissions could be halved simply by using planes more efficiently, according to The University of Oxford.
“Emissions could be reduced by 50-75% through combining three strategies to boost efficiency: flying only the most fuel-efficient aircraft, switching to all-economy layouts, and increasing passenger loads.”
3. Spain Makes Investment in Pumped Hydro
Spain is allocating €90 million for new pumped hydro projects, relays ESS News. Pumped hydro improves the economics of variable wind and solar resources by storing excess generation for long periods.
“Grants will support: new reversible hydroelectric plants, expansion or modification of existing facilities, conversion of conventional plants into pumped storage facilities, and use of existing reservoirs”

4. Egypt Signs Solar + Storage Deal
Egypt has signed a $1.8 billion energy deal, says Reuters. The project will bring nearly 2 GW of solar and 4 GWh of battery storage to the land of the ancient pharaohs.
“Egypt hopes to have renewable energy reach 42% of its electricity generation mix by 2030…”
5. Tidal Power Project Proposed in UK
The famed architect of the London Eye has proposed a 2.5 GW tidal barrage in the UK, reports The Guardian. The project would use a new, more environmentally friendly curved lagoon design and would be the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.
“The vision includes a path along the top of the semi-circular barrage for walkers and cyclists willing to brave the south-westerlies, a water-sports marina, a lido and an observation tower.”
📈 Chart of the Week
Greece has become a quiet decarbonization superstar, as it has sharply reduced its coal use in favor of wind, solar, and some fossil gas. The sunny Aegean nation plans to eliminate coal from the grid this year.
